…NSC Releases Activities’ Calendar

Residents from Sinoe County across Liberia, including those in the Diaspora are gearing up for the County’s July 9, and Homecoming Celebration 2026.
Before the 1980 political change in Liberia, the people of Sinoe County annually observed July 9 as that County’s Founding Day, commemorating the arrival of the early settlers at the mouth of the Sinoe River from the State of Mississippi, United States of America, on July 9, 1838.
This historic observance remains a symbol of that county’s rich heritage, unity, and enduring legacy.
A dispatch issued by the Sinoe County’s National Steering Committee (NSC), disclosed that the 2026 event is a collaborative initiative being organized under the auspices of the major stakeholders of the County, including the County Legislative Caucus, the County Administration headed by the Superintendent, traditional leaders, youth and women organizations, civil society groups, and Sinoe citizens residing both in Liberia and across the diaspora.
The dispatch states that hundreds of sons, daughters, and friends of Sinoe County are expected to converge in the Port City of Greenville to participate in the week-long celebration.
It is being held under the theme: “One County, One Future, One People.”

The 2026 celebration Steering Committee (NSC) indicated that it will place special emphasis on fostering dialogue on contemporary issues affecting the Sinoe County while promoting peace, reconciliation, unity, and inclusive development.
“It will also serve as an opportunity to strengthen the bonds among Sinoe citizens at home and abroad, and mobilize support for sustainable county development”, the dispatch noted.
Meanwhile, the National Steering Committee (NSC) has released the official calendar of activities for this year’s commemoration of the Founding of Sinoe County.
From July 2, to today, July 3 are arrival of delegates, July 4,General clean-up exercise, July 5 Memorial or Thanksgiving Service, July 6 Peace, and Reconciliation Dialogue, July 7, Social-Cultural Event, July 8, Youth Forum featuring intellectual discourse, debate, and quizzing and July 9, Grand Celebration (Homecoming Day- Parade, Ball and cultural activities.
The Steering Committee is however calling on all Sinoe residents, friends of the county and development partners to actively participate in this year’s historic celebration and contribute meaningfully to the continued peace, unity, and sustainable development of Sinoe County.
Historical Background of Sinoe County
Sinoe County is one of Liberia’s fifteen counties, with the capital city being Greenville.
It has a population of approximately 151, 149 as of the 2022 National Census, making it one of the least populated counties in Liberia.
The county covers an area of 10,133 square kilometers and is known for its lower tropical forests, mid-size hills, and various valleys and water sources.
Sinoe County is home to the Sapo National Park, which is Liberia’s largest protected rainforest, and has two community forests; Nitrian and Nimopho.
The county’s economy is diverse, with rice cultivation in the upland yam, cocoa, plantains, potatoes, vegetables, rubber, coffee, and sugarcane cultivation in the low-lying areas.
Long settled by indigenous peoples, this area became colonized by more than 300 freed African-American slaves from Prospect Hill Plantation, Mississippi in 1835.
The colony was originally called Mississippi-in-Africa, under the auspices of a chapter of the American Colonization Society.
Greenville was named after Judge James Green and was established with the freed Black Americans of the society in 1838.
Green was instrumental in bringing a group of slaves from the Mississippi Delta to Liberia.

The Districts of Sinoe County include: Bodae District, Bokon District, Butaw District, Dugbe River District, Greenville District, Jaedae District, Jaedepo District, Juarzon District, Kpayan District, Kulu Shaw Boe District.
Others include, Plahn Nyarn District, Pynes Town District, Sanquin District 1, Sanquin District 2, Sanquin District 3, Seekon District and Wedjah District.
