By Perry Zordyu Johnsonville-The Government of Liberia, through the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MYS), in collaboration with the Liberia National Rehabilitation and Resettlement Commission (LRRRC) and partners, has marked the first anniversary of its At-Risk Youth Rehabilitation Program under the theme, “A Year of Healing, A Life of Hope.”
The ceremony, held at the LRRRC Rehabilitation Center in Johnsonville, brought together more than 200 beneficiaries, government officials, development partners, community representatives, and stakeholders.
Launched on August 21, 2025, with support from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the program addresses drug and substance abuse among vulnerable youth through education, psychosocial counseling, therapy, vocational training, family reunification, behavioral rehabilitation, and reintegration.
Speaking at the event, Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation Managing Director Mohammed Ali reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to combating drug abuse and trafficking. He said young people struggling with substance abuse should be treated as victims in need of rehabilitation, while those trafficking and selling illicit drugs must face the law.
Deputy Youth Development Minister F. Alphonso Y. Belleh said rehabilitation must go beyond treatment by equipping young people with practical skills and preparing them for economic productivity and successful reintegration. He announced plans to open the Youth Agriculture Training Center in Bensonville by October 2026 to provide TVET opportunities for qualified rehabilitated youth.
Drug abuse survivor and university student Tommy Mulbah shared his recovery journey, telling beneficiaries, “I was once like you. I was rehabilitated by this very place, and today I am an active journalist.” He urged them to remain committed to recovery and become productive citizens.
NADSAP Medical Coordinator Izetta Sheriff described the initiative as a national, multi-sectoral intervention focused on transforming lives and rebuilding families and communities.
As the program enters its second year, stakeholders called for sustained investment in rehabilitation, skills development, psychosocial support, family engagement, and economic opportunities, ensuring that a year of healing becomes a lifetime of hope, dignity, and opportunity.
