New York- Liberia has reaffirmed its commitment to peaceful and sustainable use of outer space, calling for stronger international cooperation to address space debris.

Liberiaโ€™s Minister Plenipotentiary and Deputy Permanent Representative, Baba Sillah, emphasized the importance of preserving outer space as a peaceful and secure environment for present and future generations.

He delivered the statement today during the Fourth Committee meeting of the United Nations General Assembly Agenda Item 46(a): International Cooperation in the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space in New York.

He reiterated the significance of international space law, particularly the principles enshrined in the 1967 Outer Space Treaty, which provides the foundation for the exploration and use of outer space for peaceful purposes.

Liberia recognized the growing challenge of space debris and the importance of ensuring the long-term sustainability of outer space activities.

DPR Sillah encouraged Member States to strengthen international cooperation in the mitigation of space debris, the exchange of relevant information, and the development of responsible practices that protect the space environment and preserve access to outer space for future generations.

Liberia emphasized the need for enhanced African involvement in space science and technology, advocating for increased collaboration among the United Nations, African Union, regional bodies, and international development partners to improve access to space technologies and enhance the technical capabilities of African nations.

He underscored the immense contributions of the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space and the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs in promoting international dialogue, enhancing capacity-building, and ensuring that space activities contribute to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

โ€œWe called upon all Member States to renew their commitment to making outer space a domain of peace, scientific progress, cooperation, and sustainable development,” he said.

The Republic of Liberia endorsed multilateral efforts for peaceful outer space exploration, international partnerships, and ensuring developing countries are included in the evolving space sector.
