Monrovia–The Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) is preparing for the return of former President George Manneh Weah while opposition leaders are expected to convene next weekend for a roundtable discussion on Liberia’s political and governance challenges.
Weah is expected to return to Liberia on Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2026, after spending an extended period outside the country.
The party’s National Executive Committee has designated former Foreign Affairs Minister Ambassador Dee-Maxwell Saah Kemayah to lead and coordinate an Opposition Leaders’ Roundtable Discussion scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 5, at the Jamaica Resort in Paynesville.
CDC Chairman Atty. Janga Kowo said the discussion will bring together leaders from Liberia’s opposition community and will be presided over by Weah.
Kowo said the engagement will provide opposition leaders an opportunity to discuss the country’s political, economic, security and governance challenges while strengthening cooperation in defense of democracy, constitutional governance and national accountability.
Weah’s return comes as Liberia’s political landscape has undergone several developments during his absence, including the incarceration of his former vice president over allegations of drug trafficking.
In preparation for Weah’s return, the CDC National Executive Committee has constituted a Special Steering Committee headed by former House Speaker Dr. Bhofal Chambers to organize a reception for the former president.
The committee has also been authorized to establish subcommittees and undertake activities deemed necessary to facilitate the reception.
“All CDC lawmakers, including representatives and senators, are members of the committee,” Kowo said.
The committee is chaired by Chambers, with Gabriel Nmah and Emmanuel T.T. Swen serving as co-chairmen. Swen will also oversee mobilization efforts, while Cllr. Jlateh Sayor will serve as secretary.
Other members include Lewis Wright, general coordinator; Dadee Gibson, coordinator; Famata Wesseh of Margibi County, financial secretary; and Alvin Wesseh, chief spokesman.
Michael Tarr, Abu Sheriff, Nora Weh, Mohammed Jalloh, Sriyea Musu Soji, Gertrude J.D. Williams, Thomas Kelvin Kollie, Hilton Koffa Bioh and Kolu Sumo were also named to various roles, including social media coordinator, communications coordinator and committee members respectively.
Margibi County Sen. Nathaniel Farlo McGill, former Rep. Moses Acarous Gray, Israel Akinsanya, Paulita Wie and former Public Works Minister Ruth Collins were named as ex-officio members.
Kowo called on CDC partisans, supporters, well-wishers and other peace-loving Liberians to participate in welcoming Weah home.
“The CDC calls upon all partisans, supporters, well-wishers and peace-loving Liberians to participate in welcoming His Excellency George Manneh Weah home,” Kowo said.
The former president’s return and the planned opposition roundtable are expected to draw attention as opposition leaders consider ways to strengthen cooperation and respond to the country’s political and governance challenges.
