Snowe Warns Boakai, Says He Will Vote Against Tweh’s Confirmation

‎Monrovia-Bomi County Senator Edwin Melvin Snowe has warned President Joseph Nyuma Boakai that he will vote against the confirmation of Cllr. Oswald Tweh as Minister of National Defense Designate before the Liberian Senate.
‎In a social media post, Senator Snowe criticized Cllr. Tweh’s performance during his tenure as Minister of Justice and Attorney General, alleging that his leadership contributed to the politicization of Liberia’s justice system.
‎According to Senator Snowe, the Minister of National Defense Designate, who previously served as Minister of Justice, was expected to serve as the government’s principal legal adviser while providing the President and administration with prudent, independent, and objective legal counsel. However, Snowe argued that Tweh’s tenure too often reflected political considerations.
‎“That record gives me serious concern about his suitability to serve in a position of leadership involving the Armed Forces of Liberia,” Senator Snowe stated.
‎He emphasized that the military is one of Liberia’s most sensitive national institutions and must remain professional, disciplined, apolitical, and firmly committed to its constitutional responsibilities.
‎The opposition lawmaker further warned that leadership that risks introducing politics into the military could undermine its professionalism, cohesion, and institutional integrity, with potentially serious consequences for Liberia’s national security.
‎Senator Snowe clarified that his decision to vote against Cllr. Tweh’s confirmation is not personal, but rather based on his assessment of Tweh’s record in public office and his responsibility as a Senator to protect the integrity of Liberia’s national institutions.
‎“I do not believe Cllr. Tweh’s record as Minister of Justice inspires the confidence necessary for this responsibility,” Senator Snowe said.
‎President Joseph Nyuma Boakai recently nominated former Justice Minister Cllr. Oswald Tweh to serve as Minister of National Defense Designate. His nomination is subject to confirmation by the Liberian Senate.
