The House of Representatives is said to be very worried about the increasing wave of waste and has pushed that body to establish a specialized committee to develop recommendations aimed at addressing the country’s growing waste management challenges.
The decision follows a communication from Representative James Kolleh, who expressed concerns over poor sanitation in market places and the increasing waste management problems confronting Monrovia and Paynesville.
Representations from the Monrovia City Corporation (MCC), John-Charuk Siafa, Mayor Robert Bestman of Paynesville City Corporation (PCC) and Liberia Marketing Association (LMA) President Lusu K. Sloan made presentations highlighting the challenges they are facing in managing waste.
Siafa, Robert and Sloan seem not to have practical solutions to the garbage problems, something that made the lawmakers think of a way forward.
Following the deliberations, Rep. Dixon Seboe moved that a specialized committee be constituted to work with the relevant institutions and technical experts to develop practical and sustainable solutions to the country’s waste management challenges.
Speaker Richard Nagbe Koon subsequently named Representative Gbessie Sonii Feika as Chair and Representative Nyahn G. Flomo as Co-Chair of the committee.
He named other members as Representatives Marie Johnson, Isaac Bannie, Mustafa Waritay, Emmanuel Yarh and Priscilla A. Cooper.
The Speaker also designated Representatives Dixon Seboe, Prince Koinah, Ellen Attoh-Wreh and Cllr. Michael M. Thomas, Prince A.Toles members of the House’s expert financial committee, to serve alongside the panel.
The committee has been given two weeks to report its findings and recommendations to the Plenary.
