-Mourns His Passing
Paynesville– Former President George Manneh Weah has extended profound condolences to the Family of the late Dr. Abass Kanneh, Grand Mufti of the Republic of Liberia, the National Muslim Council of Liberia, the entire Muslim Community in Liberia and around the world, the Religious/Interfaith Community and Liberians, in general, following his passing on Wednesday, July 29, 2026 in Freetown, Sierra Leone.
Former President Weah, who is currently out of the Country stressed, “The Muslim Community and I have also come a long way. I attended Muslim Congress, I was at some point a Muslim, and converted back to being a Christian up to present. They are also my People. Just like the Christian Community, when they are bereaved, I am bereaved; when they have a loss, it is my loss, as in this case of our loss of Dr. Abass Kanneh, Grand Mufti of the Republic of Liberia. I will visit the bereaved Family of Dr. Kanneh and the National Muslim Council of Liberia upon my return to Liberia to again express my deepest sympathies in person”.
Ex-President Weah described the late Dr. Abass Kanneh, Grand Mufti of the Republic of Liberia as an Educator, expert in islamic theology, comparative theology and Islamic jurisprudence, a renowned Islamic Scholar, patriot, and an advocate for peace and social justice in Liberia, and humanity in general.
Former President Weah expressed that the late Grand Mufti Abass Kanneh will be remembered amongst other achievements for his teachings, scholarly work, selflessness and services to the Muslim community in Liberia, the Religious/Interfaith Community, Liberian society and the world at large.
It is the fervent prayer and hope of Former President Weah that the Kanneh Family, National Muslim Council of Liberia, the entire Muslim Community in Liberia and around the world, the Religious/Interfaith Community, and Liberians in general, will take consolation in the Lord as they all, including himself go through this difficult period of mourning.
