Grand Bassa-Electricity is one of the basic social services that is essence for any country, the world over, least to talk about a community or county,because it plays a crucial role in various aspects of the people life.
It also can stimulates the operations of factories, businesses and households, and is vital in diving of economic activities. Besides, electricity can enhances the quality of living by providing lighting, refrigeration, and household appliances, which are all necessary for daily undertakings.
Moreover, it is indispensable for economic development, and electricity reliance is significant for societal progress, which residents of Buchanan, and other parts of Grand Bassa County, one of the three original counties of Liberia will in the coming days soon be enjoying and experiencing.
This will follow the switching of the Electricity or Power Supply by Liberia’s President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, amongst some of the key development projects that are to be dedicated or commissioned as Grand Bassa County host the 179th Independence Day Celebration.
Days ahead of the dedication ceremony, the workforce of the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC), the leadership of the county and hierarchies at the Local Government Ministry(LGM), are working tirelessly to ensure this become a reality, after nearing 35 years of no electricity in Grand Bassa County, due to the result of the country’s civil war.
Buchanan, was one of the cities in Liberia were residents in years back before the civil unrest used to experience economic growth, development and social activities were also at its best because of electricity was stabled.
But appearing Wednesday, 22 July on Radio Gbehzohn, one of the popular radio stations,Grand Bassa County Superintendent, Karyou Johnson: “After nearing 35 of being out of electricity, residents of this great county will once again experience stable, accessible and affordable, when President Joseph Nyuma Boakai switches it on”.
Superintendent Johnson narrated that the electricity component will change the economic dimensions in the county, as more factories and companies will be trooping in to operate, local businesses will grow as well, employment opportunities will increase, hospitals and clinics will not be looking over the shoulders for power outage.
“Furthermore, the students will soon be studying under lights and night schools will be in full swing”, the Grand Bassa County Superintendent noted.

Minister for Research, Planning and Program, Selena Polson Mappy, who spoke highly about the positive impacts the various projects will have on the livelihoods of the people of Grand Bassa County.
“We can named health facility, court building, school and market structures, bridge, doctor housing unit, the superintendent compound, and more importantly the restoration of electricity to the county after over three decades”, Minister Mappy stated.
She disclosed that the hands for the residents of Grand Bassa County will soon get full, when the Liberian Leader switches the electricity on because business people will be pulling from directions in this county.
For his part, Assistant Local Government Minister for Research, Planning and Program, D. Emmanuel Whienyue, indicated that Grand Bassa County is the second in Liberia, but over the past years it has been prioritized most often to be the first in term of government’s development programs.
Minister Whienyue pointed to the first county service center in Liberia, which was done in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County before extending it to other counties, and the launched of government’s key policies documents, among others.
He reminded residents: “When these things or activities of Independence Day Celebration are happening, they push a lot of things;development, some projects are fast-track that are giving lot of attentions, and that are what taking place in Grand Bassa County today”.
Minister Whienyue underscored that residents of the county stand to benefit from the various projects that have been dedicated or that will be commissioned like the Joseph J. Chessman Elementary in Edina and health center in Charlie Town, where the people and nearby communities will now have access to healthcare services, stopping them from traveling long distances either to LAC orBuchanan to seek medical attention, and many other benefits.
Brief History of Grand Bassa County
Grand Bassa County was established in 1833, and is one of Liberia’s three original founding counties.
It is named after the Bassa-speaking people who form majority of its population. Grand Bassa County history is marked by its role in the American Colonization Society (ACS) efforts to resettle freed African-Americans in West Africa.
The capital Buchanan was founded in 1835, and named after Thomas Buchanan, the First Governor of the Commonwealth of Liberia. The country’s economy has been significantly influenced by the mining industry, predominantly the extraction of iron ore by multi-national companies like LAMCO, than and now Arcelor Mittal.
Despite these developments, the county’s natural resources have not always reached local communities, among other things leading to environmental challenges, and disparities.
Grand Bassa County’s rich history and cultural heritage continue to be preserved and celebrated by its people, notwithstanding the challenges posed by globalization and climate change.
