-It Appears Little But it matters A Lot

By Maximilian Kasseh, Jr. Contributor Writer

Traffic lights use a universal color code-red for stop, yellow for caution, and green for go-to-manage vehicle and pedestrian movement safely at intersections. They prevent crashes, reduce traffic jams, and create an orderly system for everyone on the road.

By universal color code, this means that colors displayed on traffic lights are used all over the world where traffic lights are used. Each color has distinct meaning:

Red-Stop completely behind the line. It signals extreme danger or a block in travel, Yellow (Amber)-Slow down and prepare to stop. It warns that red is coming next, and Green designates that you Move forward or turn if the path is clear. It means it is safe to proceed.

Why Traffic Lights Matter

Safety: They stop cars from crashing into each other at busy crossings.

Fairness: They take turns giving each direction a chance to move.

Walking Safety: They give people on foot a safe time to cross the street.

Less Pollution: They help keep traffic moving so cars do not waste gas idling

Shirking

Shirking or dodging traffic lights first, is a violation of traffic rules, and further puts the entire traffic movement at high risk, including pedestrians. This may result in serious injuries and even death of drivers and pedestrians caused by accidents when traffic lights are evaded.

Therefore, it is mandatory that enforcers of traffic regulations, who are primarily the police, be alighted at all times at intersections where there are traffic lights to make sure traffic lights are not violated.

Besides, violators must be chased by police, incarcerated and fined. This is where our police will need logistic such as cars and motorbikes. We cannot accomplish tasks that would instill sanity in society by holding back our resources, especially for the relevant duties.

Making sacrifices in such a crucial area is worth it. This requires no form of hesitancy. The police should be empowered to accomplish this feat for the safety of our people.

We cannot accuse the police of defaulting on its responsibility when they are incapacitated to perform what is required of them by law, and those who intentionally hold back resources as a means to impede the police’s effectiveness should also be prosecuted. We must not throw our weight at misplaced priority areas.

That is wrong. If our authorities would consider such an issue as irrelevant and impertinent, then they must rethink.

I am calling upon the Liberian National Police to act swiftly in fulfilling one of its mandates-enforcing traffic light regulations for the safety of drivers and pedestrians alike. Act now, please!

This appears little, but it matters if care is not given.
