CAPITOL HILL – The Legislative Press Pool (LEGISPOOL) has swiftly intervened in the recent statement made by House Speaker Richard Nagbe Koon against journalists covering the Legislature.
Accordimg to a release, the Legislative Press Pool had launched an immediate investigation when Speaker Koon was heard on a loudspeaker threatening journalists covering the Legislature with possible detention.
The remarks, made during the 12th Day Sitting of the 3rd Quarter of the 2nd Session, have since raised alarm within the media community and has since sparked outraged in the public.
LEGISPOOL reminds the public that journalists assigned to the Legislature play a vital role in ensuring transparency and accountability noting that any form of intimidation, arrest, or detention directed at any member is deeply concerning.
Hence, the body is urging all members of LEGISPOOL and the journalism community to remain calm and professional as leadership engages Speaker Koon to clarify the intent of his statement.
At the same time, LEGISPOOL has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the rights and security of all reporters on Capitol Hill and calls on relevant authorities to uphold press freedom.
