The first batch of 20 deportees, out of a total of 1,200 third-country nationals being deported from the United States under an agreement between the U.S. and Liberian governments, has arrived in Liberia.
The group was received Thursday at Roberts International Airport in Margibi County under heavy security as media were not allowed entrance into the airport facility.
Officials from the Liberia Refugee Repatriation and Resettlement Commission (LRRRC), Liberia Immigration Service (LIS), and the Liberia National Police were present during the arrival, which appeared to have been conducted with limited public access.
The deportees arrived aboard an Eastern Airlines flight from the United States on Thursday, August 20, 2026.
The flight, which was scheduled to arrive at 11 a.m., was delayed by approximately two hours.
Upon arrival, the deportees were escorted under heavy security and did not use the main entrance of Roberts International Airport.
