Monrovia-Opposition Congress for Democratic Change Senator Nathaniel McGill, is seeking clarification from the Unity Party-led government regarding financing of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s official visit to Türkiye.
In a statement posted on his official social media page, the CDC Lawmaker who is the Senator of Margibi County questioned who is paying for the President’s trip and whether the aircraft being used has any connection to the Karpowership.
He raised serious concerns saying, “Who is paying for the President’s trip to Turkey-Karpowership Energy or the Government of Liberia? Why is the President traveling on a Karpowership private jet? Does Karpowership have any current or future business interests in Liberia?”
He added that those are “legitimate questions that deserve clear and transparent answers,” stressing that the Liberian people have the right to know who is financing the trip and whether there are any potential conflicts of interest.
McGill’s comments followed an announcement by the Executive Mansion of Liberia on July 5, 2026, confirming that President Boakai had departed Liberia for a working visit to Istanbul, Türkiye.
According to the Executive Mansion, President Boakai is expected to meet with Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to discuss ways of strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation between Liberia and Türkiye.
The Executive Manson said the discussions are expected to focus on trade and investment, infrastructure, healthcare, education, agriculture, energy, and technical cooperation, but didn’t say who was funding the travel.
