— Over Alleged Mafa River Pollution

‎Robertsport, G.Cape Mount -A major legal battle is unfolding as Bea Mountain Mining Company faces a staggering US$100 million lawsuit over allegations of polluting the Mafa River in Grand Cape Mount County.‎‎

According to Punch FM, the lawsuit, filed by the Consortium of Legal Practitioners Incorporated, accuses the mining company of reckless, negligent, and unlawful operations that allegedly led to severe environmental contamination and widespread harm to local communities.‎‎

Speaking to reporters, Cllr. Arthur Johnson claimed that hazardous chemicals, including cyanide and mercury, were discharged into the river, introducing toxic substances that have reportedly caused deaths, injuries, and extensive environmental damage.

‎‎According to Johnson, more than 13 people, including women and children, have allegedly died due to the contamination. ‎‎

He added that the pollution has devastated livelihoods, destroyed livestock, and left communities without safe water for drinking, cooking, fishing, and farming.

‎‎The Mafa River, once a lifeline for residents, is now said to be unsafe for any domestic use.‎‎

The lawsuit outlines 25 counts against Bea Mountain Mining Company, seeking a combination of:‎

Compensatory damages

‎Environmental and equitable damages‎

Punitive and exemplary damages.‎‎

These claims collectively total US$100 million.‎

Johnson further alleged that despite the scale of the crisis, the company has failed to respond meaningfully to affected communities since 2022.‎‎

Looking ahead, the legal representatives indicated that the case could escalate beyond Liberia.

‎‎They are considering filing an additional complaint before the ECOWAS Court of Justice, citing human rights violations and environmental damages.‎‎

As the case develops, it is expected to draw significant national and international attention, raising serious questions about environmental accountability and corporate responsibility in Liberia’s mining sector.‎‎

Meanwhile, Bea Mountain management has not responded to the accusations levied by the group.‎
