Monrovia —House Speaker Richard Nagbe Koon on Thursday held a conciliatory meeting with the Legislative Press Pool (LEGISPOOL) and the Press Union of Liberia (PUL), days after issuing a public apology in the House Chambers for remarks perceived as threatening toward journalists.
The high level engagement brought together LEGISPOOL President Emmanuel T. J. Kollie, PUL President Julius Kanubah, House Press Director Ambassador Robert Haynes, and Speaker Koon’s Media Advisor, Vehzelee Sumo.
The discussion centered on strengthening cooperation between the Legislature and accredited reporters assigned to the Capitol.
Speaker Koon reiterated his apology, clarifying that he had no intention of threatening members of the press or undermining their work.
He emphasized his commitment to maintaining a respectful, professional, and transparent environment for journalists covering proceedings of the House of Representatives.
Both LEGISPOOL President Kollie and PUL President Kanubah acknowledged the Speaker’s apology but stressed the importance of safeguarding press freedom and ensuring that the working relationship between lawmakers and the media remains grounded in mutual respect.
They noted that journalists play a critical role in promoting openness and accountability within the Legislature.
The meeting ended on a constructive note, with all parties agreeing to enhance dialogue and foster improved coordination between the House leadership and the press corps.
