About fifty-seven (57) fishmongers and fish farmers from across Montserrado, Grand Cape Mount, Grand Bassa, Bomi, and Margibi Counties on Friday, February 6, 2026, benefited from a day-long training on fish handling, preservation, and the use of Orange Money services.

The activity is part of the preparation for the March 14, 2026, Fish Market Day Sale at the Invincible Park in Sinkor.

The training and planned Fish Market Day are intended to strengthen artisanal fisheries and fish farming to improve quality, and promote safe, efficient market practices.‎ ‎

Facilitating the fish handling and preservation session on the topic Fishmongers Training on Fish Processing, Preservation and Handling for Market Day, Associate Director of Competent Lab, Sonkarlay Karnue, emphasized that “proper handling determines fish quality and value.”

He highlighted the correct use of ice from catch to sale, and stressed the importance of using appropriate, chemical-free wood when smoking fish, warning that unsafe practices pose serious health risks to consumers.‎ ‎

The training session also provided a platform for the Orange Money team to drill the fishmongers and fish farmers on the usage of the Orange Money services.‎

‎Speaking earlier, the Deputy Director for Technical Services of NaFAA, William Y. Boah, urged fishmongers to work closely with the Government to operate within an enabling environment.

“The Government of Liberia is committed to supporting fishmongers and fish farmers to improve their livelihoods and ensure a steady supply of quality fish for public consumption,” he said.‎

Participants welcomed the initiative and praised NaFAA for empowering fishing communities through skills development, digital payment solutions, and improved market access.
