— Cape Mount Kickball Team Abandoned After Breaking Almost A Decade-Long Barrier

By: Success Z.L.Carl, Jr

The Cape Mount County Kickball Team has made history at the National County Sports Meet, yet instead of celebration, they have been met with silence, neglect, and institutional abandonment.

After eight consecutive years of failing to qualify from the zone stage, the Gbassajamba Girls finally broke through, advancing to the quarter-finals for the first time in nearly ten years.

This is not just a win, it is a breakthrough that should have ignited countywide pride. Instead, it has exposed a painful truth about how women’s sports are treated in Cape Mount.

Sources said not a single member of the Cape Mount Legislative Caucus, nor any senior county official, has acknowledged the team’s achievement adding that the deafening silence speaks volumes.

Even more disturbing are the conditions under which the team is being forced to compete. Players report that there is no consistent food, no drinking water, and no essential materials at their camp.

In some instances, the team eats only once a day; sometimes as late as 8:00 PM. This is not preparation for elite competition; it is neglect. Our sources noted.

Financial uncertainty has further demoralized the team. The players and officials say they have no clear information about their financial standing at this crucial stage of the tournament. Worse still, the Sports Steering Committee reportedly owes the team benefits they are entitled to, yet has failed to honor these obligations.

The National County Sports Meet is not only about football. Kickball is one of Liberia’s most vibrant and competitive women’s sports, and its continued marginalization reflects a broader failure to practice gender equality in sports governance.

What message does this send to young girls in Cape Mount who dream of representing their county? That excellence will be ignored? That sacrifice will be punished with neglect?

This is a call to action. The Cape Mount Legislative Caucus, the Sports Steering Committee, and county authorities must be held accountable. Recognition, welfare, transparency, and fairness are not favors, they are rights.

The Gbassajamba Girls have already done the impossible on the field. It is time for Cape Mount’s leaders to stop hiding and start standing with their champions.

History has been made. Now justice must follow.
