MONROVIA- A Liberian Youth Developer and Advocate has called for increased investment in youth volunteerism, describing service as a powerful force for leadership development, international cooperation, and social transformation.
Speaking recently at the Global Executive Diplomatic Summit – IYNUNSCR 2250 Liberia in Sinkor, Madam Ambassador Agnes Fortune-Cannon challenged young people to embrace volunteerism as a pathway to opportunity and urged governments, international organizations, and development partners to create more platforms that empower youth to serve their communities.
Delivering a keynote address on the theme “Youth, Volunteerism, Service, and Human Honor,” she emphasized that some of history’s most influential leaders began their journeys through acts of voluntary services and sacrifices for their communities.
Drawing inspiration from Nelson Mandela, she noted that the late South African statesman devoted his life to justice and humanity long before becoming a global icon.
She stressed that young people are not merely the leaders of tomorrow, but active contributors to solving today’s challenges.
According to her, volunteerism equips youth with practical skills, valuable experience, and meaningful networks that can shape their future and strengthen society.
She furthered that volunteer work often opens doors to mentorship, leadership opportunities, career advancement, and personal growth, enabling young people to discover their potential while making a difference in the lives of others.
Fortune-Cannon described volunteerism as a training ground for leadership. Citing leadership author Simon Sinek, she noted that true leadership is rooted in service rather than authority.
Addressing the future of youth leadership, Fortune-Cannon argued that the responsibilities of tomorrow are shaped by the actions of today.
Madam Fortune-Cannon, narrated that empowering young people through service is essential to building stronger communities, stronger nations, and a more peaceful and prosperous world.
