The House of Representatives of the 55 legislature specialized committee  set up with the responsibility to review portions of Liberia’s Code of Conduct has begun hearings on proposed amendments to the legislation.

The committee convened its first hearing involving officials of the National Elections Commission (NEC) and the Governance Commission (GC) Monday June 22, 2026.

The hearing focused on a bill seeking amendments to Sections 5.1 and 5.2 of the National Code of Conduct, particularly provisions governing the resignation of public officials seeking elected office.

The proposed amendment, introduced by Montserrado County District #12 Representative, Jerry K. Yorgbor, seeks to remove language referencing to officials who “desire to canvass or contest” elected office while reaffirming existing resignation requirements.

Appearing before the committee, National Elections Commission Chairman, Cllr. Jonathan K. Weedor, outlined the Commission’s position on the proposed amendment and its implications for Liberia’s electoral process.

For his part, the Acting Chairman of the  Governance Commission, Professor Alaric K. Tokpa, also discussed governance and legal considerations surrounding the proposal and emphasized the importance of maintaining clarity and consistency in the interpretation of public service regulations.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Specialized Committee, Rep. Ernest M. Manseah, said the committee would carefully examine all submissions, observations, and recommendations before reaching a determination on the proposed amendment.

He noted that the committee’s eventual recommendation would be based on the evidence, opinions, and legal perspectives presented during the public hearing process.
